7 Reasons Why You Absolutely HAVE TO Visit The Burren This Year

The Burren is a wild and rocky Irish national park which offers an absolutely unforgettable Irish experience.

Just listen to the Lonely Planet Ireland website description… “[The Burren is] a unique striated lunar-like landscape of barren grey limestone that was shaped beneath ancient seas, then forced high and dry by a great geological cataclysm.”

Now, you might expect this type of place to be suitable mainly for the walkers and nature lover crowd, but this is simply not true. The Burren offers an experience for everyone.

Whether you’re a backpacker, a history, geography or geology geek, a family with kids or even someone who’s up for some real adventure you’re going to fall in love with this breathlessly beautiful part of Ireland.

1. You’ll feel like you’re on a COMPLETELY different planet

The landscape on The Burren is so completely barren and so very unique that it’s often compared to the moon. You simply won’t find another place like it on earth! Isn’t that enough reason in itself to pay this stunning Irish natural park a visit? 🙂

2. You’ll swot up on history

If you want to really get your teeth into Ireland’s Ancient East, then you’ll LOVE The Burren because the region boasts numerous wonderful Iron age and prehistoric sites which date back as far as 5000 years ago.
These include the Gleninsheen Wedge Tomb (a prehistoric grave), Poulnabrone Dolmen (the oldest megalithic monument in Ireland) and Caherconnell Fort (an ancient Irish ring fort) to name just a few.

3. You’ll enjoy authentic traditional Irish music

No visit to Ireland would be complete without enjoying some authentic traditional Irish music, so you’ll be very pleased to know that The Burren certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Base yourself here and you’re just a stone’s throw away from Doolin – the town considered to be the heart of the traditional Irish music scene. And who doesn’t like a lively dose of traditional Irish music?

4. It’s the perfect place for some adventure!!!!

When it comes to adventure, you name it, The Burren can provide. Well, almost…
You can get active and adventurous by trying your hand at some real rock climbing (what a view!), stretch your legs with breathtaking hill walks or trail runs, or even hop onto your bike or motorbike too.

5. Geography and geology comes to life!

Wannabe geographers and geologists listen up! The Burren is the place where all of those boring geography textbooks come to life. It’s the perfect place to take kids (and adults) of all ages, especially if they’re into rocks and nature.

6. You can enjoy Irish nature to the max

Speaking of rocks and nature, the Burren also offers great opportunities to get in touch with nature, whether that’s just by wandering around the bleak landscapes or even option for a most structured experience like the Burren Nature Sanctuary . Amazing!

7. You can even pop to the Cliffs of Moher

Best of all, the insanely famous Cliffs of Moher are within a day trip away of The Burren so you can also enjoy that experience that visitors rave about.
